Who it's for
- Children aged 4 to 8 starting Hindi letters
- Families abroad where Hindi is spoken but not yet read
- Weekend Hindi school and homeschool classrooms
- Parents who want one chart on the wall, not an app
How to use it
- 1Start with the swar only. Say the sound, point at the letter, say the word. Five letters a week is plenty.
- 2Move to the vyanjan in rows: क ख ग घ, then च छ ज झ, and so on. Each row shares a mouth position, which helps children hear the difference.
- 3Once your child knows क, teach the matra table with it: का, कि, की. Then try the same matras on a letter they know well, such as म or न.
- 4Stick the chart where your child sees it daily, and play 'find the letter' with words on packets and signs.
Questions parents ask
How many letters are in the Hindi varnamala?
Schools usually teach 13 swar (vowels, including अं and अः) and 33 vyanjan (consonants), plus the three combined letters क्ष, त्र and ज्ञ, which is what this chart shows. Some charts add ऑ or count the letters a little differently, so don't worry if your child's school book differs by one or two.
Should my child learn swar or vyanjan first?
Swar first. They are fewer, they carry the vowel sounds the matras are built on, and most children know words like aam and anaar already.
Can I print this for my class or Hindi school?
Yes. The PDF is free for personal and classroom use. Please keep the Ed Horizon footer on it and link to this page if you share it online.
