Five is a wonderful age to start Hindi. Children this age pick up sounds easily and love songs, stories and games. Start with listening and speaking, keep it playful and short, and bring in the first letters once your child is chatting happily.
Start with listening and speaking, not writing
Young children learn a language the same way they learned their first one: by hearing it often and being encouraged to speak. Reading and writing come later and are much easier once your child already knows the words.
So for the first few months, the goal is simple: lots of Hindi to listen to, and lots of chances to say a few words back.
1. Give Hindi a daily routine
Ten to fifteen minutes every day works far better than a long session once a week. Tie Hindi to moments that already happen.
- Name things in Hindi at mealtimes: roti, paani, doodh, chamach
- Use Hindi for small daily instructions: haath dho lo, jootey pehno, so jao
- Count stairs, toys or fruit in Hindi: ek, do, teen, chaar
- A short Hindi story or rhyme at bedtime
2. Use rhymes, songs and stories
Rhymes carry rhythm and vocabulary that children remember without effort. Classic rhymes like Machli jal ki rani hai and Chanda mama door ke are a lovely start. Sing them together, add actions, and let your child fill in the last word.
Picture books and simple stories in Hindi are just as useful. Point at the pictures, ask easy questions such as "Yeh kya hai?", and praise every answer, even a single word.
3. Play games in Hindi
Games make Hindi feel like fun rather than a lesson.
- I spy with colours: laal, neela, peela, hara
- Simon says with body parts: naak, kaan, aankh, haath
- Shopping play with fruit and vegetables
- Video calls with grandparents, where your child shows them a toy and names it in Hindi
4. Bring in the first letters gently
Once your child is comfortable speaking a little Hindi, start with the sounds of the vowels, the swar: अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ. Say the sound, show the letter, and connect it to a word your child knows, such as अ for anaar or आ for aam.
Then move to a few consonants, the vyanjan, in small groups. Tracing letters with a finger in sand or on a whiteboard is often more fun at this age than writing in a notebook. Keep writing practice to a few minutes.
5. Don't worry about mixing languages
Young children often mix Hindi and English in the same sentence. This is a normal part of learning two languages, not a sign of confusion. Simply repeat their sentence back in Hindi and carry on the conversation.
When a teacher can help
If Hindi isn't spoken much at home, or your child is ready for reading and writing, a patient teacher can give structure and steady practice. Short one-on-one classes built around play, songs and phonics suit five-year-olds well.
Questions parents ask
Is 5 too young to start learning Hindi?
No. Five is a great age to start. Children this age pick up new sounds easily, and short, playful sessions suit their attention span.
How long should Hindi practice be for a 5-year-old?
About ten to fifteen minutes a day, spread across routines like meals and bedtime, works better than one long session.
Which Hindi letters should a 5-year-old learn first?
Start with the vowels, the swar, such as अ, आ, इ and ई, connected to familiar words. Then add consonants a few at a time.
We don't speak Hindi at home. Can our child still learn?
Yes. Rhymes, stories, cartoons and a regular class give your child plenty of Hindi to hear and speak, even if the family speaks another language.
