Olympiad thinking: sample problems

Olympiad questions reward clear thinking more than long calculations. Here are three classic problems of the kind your child will learn to solve, with the reasoning shown.

  1. Adding 1 to 100 in seconds

    1 + 2 + 3 + … + 100

    1. Pair the first and last numbers: 1 + 100 = 101, then 2 + 99 = 101, and so on.
    2. There are 50 such pairs, each adding up to 101.
    3. 50 × 101 = 5050.

    Answer: 5050

  2. Counting handshakes

6 friends each shake hands once with every other friend. How many handshakes?

    1. Each of the 6 friends shakes hands with 5 others: 6 × 5 = 30.
    2. That counts every handshake twice, once for each person in it.
    3. 30 ÷ 2 = 15.

    Answer: 15

  3. Digits that add up to 9

How many two-digit numbers have digits that add up to 9?

    1. The tens digit can be any of 1 to 9.
    2. For each one, the units digit is fixed: 9 minus the tens digit, which is always between 0 and 8.
    3. So there is exactly one number for each tens digit: 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81 and 90.

    Answer: 9

Maths Olympiad classes: common questions

Which maths Olympiads do you prepare for?

School maths Olympiads such as the SOF International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), which many schools in India and the Gulf take part in. The same problem-solving skills carry over to competitions abroad, such as AMC 8 in the USA and the UKMT challenges in the UK. Tell us which exam your child is taking and the teacher plans around its past papers.

How is Olympiad maths different from school maths?

School maths checks that children can apply methods they have been taught. Olympiad questions are unfamiliar puzzles that need reasoning, so coaching focuses on strategies for working out what to do, not just how to calculate.

Is my child ready for Olympiad coaching?

If your child is comfortable with school maths and enjoys puzzles, they are ready. The free demo class includes a few sample problems so the teacher can suggest the right level.

Are the Maths Olympiad classes live?

Yes. Every Maths Olympiad class is taught live by a real teacher on Zoom or Google Meet, one-on-one or in a small batch. Nothing is pre-recorded.

Who are the Maths Olympiad classes for?

Class 1 – 10. Students join from across India and abroad.
