Abacus vs Vedic Maths: which is right for my child?

By Bakya Lakshmi · For parents of children aged 5 to 16 · 6 min read · Updated 4 November 2026 · Reviewed by Vinitha R, Founder & CEO

Abacus and Vedic Maths are both popular ways to build mental-maths speed, but they work in different ways and suit different ages. Here's how they compare, and how to choose.

What is abacus training?

Children learn to calculate by moving beads on an abacus. With practice, they start to picture the abacus in their mind and calculate mentally, a skill often called mental abacus. It builds number sense, concentration and calculation speed.

What is Vedic Maths?

Vedic Maths is a set of mental calculation techniques for fast arithmetic: shortcuts for multiplication, division, squares, square roots and more. Children learn patterns that let them calculate quickly and check their answers.

How they compare

A quick side-by-side:

  • Method: abacus uses a bead frame and visualisation; Vedic Maths uses written and mental shortcut techniques
  • Best ages: abacus suits roughly 5 to 12; Vedic Maths suits roughly 6 to 16
  • Focus: abacus builds number sense, concentration and mental speed; Vedic Maths builds fast, accurate calculation and pattern-spotting
  • School link: Vedic Maths techniques apply directly to school arithmetic and algebra; abacus builds a strong foundation underneath

Which should my child choose?

Younger children who enjoy hands-on learning often do well with abacus. Older children, or those who want quicker results in school calculations and timed tests, often prefer Vedic Maths. Some children do abacus first and move on to Vedic Maths later.

Neither replaces school maths

Both are add-ons that make calculation faster and more confident. Your child still needs to understand the concepts in their school syllabus. If school maths itself is the challenge, start with school maths tuition, then add abacus or Vedic Maths for speed.

What an abacus class looks like

A typical class mixes hands-on bead work with mental practice: warm-up drills, a new technique on the abacus, timed practice, and short visualisation exercises where children calculate without touching the beads. Regular short practice at home between classes makes a big difference.

What a Vedic Maths class looks like

A typical class introduces one technique, such as a multiplication shortcut, explains why it works, then practises it on increasingly harder sums. Children apply it to school-style questions so they can use it in real tests.

Signs your child is ready

For abacus: your child can count confidently and sit and focus for 15 to 20 minutes. For Vedic Maths: your child knows basic addition, subtraction and times tables, and is ready to learn faster methods.

Questions to ask before choosing a class

Whichever you choose, check these:

  • Is the class live with a teacher, or pre-recorded?
  • Is it one-on-one or a large group?
  • Are there clear levels, and how is progress measured?
  • How much practice is expected at home?
  • Can you change the teacher if it isn't a good fit?

Questions parents ask

Can my child learn abacus and Vedic Maths at the same time?

It's possible, but most children do better focusing on one at a time. Many start with abacus when young and add Vedic Maths later.

Do these help with school exams?

They help with calculation speed and accuracy, which saves time and reduces silly mistakes. Understanding the syllabus still comes from school maths.

How long does it take to see results?

It depends on practice, but most children notice faster, more confident calculation after a few months of regular classes and short daily practice.
